Buying a used performance car is one of the most rewarding purchases you can make — if you do it right. Here’s what we look for at S/S Performance Motors when evaluating every vehicle that comes through our doors.
1. Service History Is Everything
A performance car without documented service history is a gamble. Look for consistent oil changes, timing belt/chain service at the correct intervals, and any major maintenance milestones. We only stock vehicles with verifiable service records because they tell you how the previous owner treated the car.
2. Check for Modifications — and Their Quality
Modifications aren’t inherently bad, but poor modifications are a red flag. Bolt-on upgrades from reputable brands, professionally installed, can add value. Cheap eBay turbos, hacked wiring, and budget coilovers usually signal a car that’s been beaten on without proper investment in supporting mods.
3. Look Beyond the Paint
A fresh detail can hide a lot. Check the undercarriage for rust, inspect the engine bay for leaks, and look at the condition of the suspension components. On performance cars, worn bushings, leaking shocks, and cracked brake rotors are expensive to replace and tell you how hard the car was driven.
4. Know the Model’s Common Issues
Every performance car has its known weak points. The S65 V8 in the E90 M3 has rod bearing concerns. The VR38DETT in the GT-R needs regular transmission fluid changes. The 4.0 flat-six in the 911 GT3 is bulletproof but the IMS bearing in older 997s isn’t. Do your research on the specific model before buying.
5. Buy from Someone Who Knows the Car
The biggest advantage of buying from a specialist like S/S Performance Motors is that we know these cars inside and out. We’ve already done the homework, the inspection, and the vetting. When you buy from us, you’re getting a vehicle we’ve personally selected and would be proud to own.
